7-Year-Old Florida Girl Saves Family, 11-Month-Old Cousin From Fire: ‘I Didn’t Want Us to Get Killed’

A fast-acting Florida girl saved her family from a house fire Sunday, People reports.

Tracy Durant, 7, said she remembered the tips she learned in school about fire safety when a fire at her hose broke out.

The fire began while Tracy’s 13-year-old cousin, Shemaiah, was cooking on the stove.

“It looked like when the stove was on and it came up top and then it kept getting bigger and bigger,” Tracy said. “I didn’t want us to get killed.”

Her parents were not home at the time so Tracy ran to a neighbor’s house for help.

Shemaiah and Tracy’s 11-month-old cousin were able to escape. Shemaiah was taken to the hospital in serious condition but is expected to recover.

“I feel happy to save my baby cousin because I didn’t want him to get killed,” Tracy said. “He is 11 months and he will turn one next month on the ninth.”

Tracy credited her teacher for teaching her what to do in the event of a fire.

“She said one day I would be a hero,” Tracy said. “I wanted to start practicing now.”
