‘Complete Miracle’: Pilot Flies Under Overpass Onto Busy Highway in Emergency Landing Right Out of a Movie

An “experienced” pilot flew under an overpass as he landed on the 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa, California after his plane’s engine failed, KTLA reports.

The Costa Mesa Fire Department tweeted Sunday that the incident happened around 8 pm and that no injuries were reported.

The pilot, named Izzy, and his friend were flying to Van Nuys from San Diego when he says the “engine quit.”

Izzy said he intended to fly to the John Wayne Airport but could not overcome the strong winds.

“I saw an opening on the highway and I went for it right away,” Izzy said. “I had to make a last minute, last second judgement on whether or not we could make it over, and we didn’t have the airspeed to make it over, so I went under it.”

Costa Mesa Fire Capt. Chris Coatez told KTLA that they received a call of a plane crash but were pleased to find the plane was fully intact when they arrived. Coatez said it was a “complete miracle” that the traffic was not as busy as usual when Izzy landed.
