Couple Bet It All on Bitcoin Years Ago, Now They’re Giving All Their Huge Gains to Cancer Hospital

A couple who bet early on Bitcoin are donating their big gains to a cancer hospital, CNBC reports.

Halle Tecco and Jeff Hammerbacher bet on a little-known cryptocurrency bitcoin in 2013. Then they waited.

“We pretty much forgot about it for a few years (the bitcoin investment) and then this year, it got interesting,” Tecco told CNBC.

Tecco did not say how much the investment was worth but the value is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. At the time the investment was made, Tecco says Bitcoin was selling for around $800. Last week, it soared to more than $17,000.

Now, they’re giving all their bitcoin to the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center in South Carolina. Tecco says the hospital can decide whether to convert the bitcoin to dollars to keep the investment and see where the price goes.

Hammerbacher is an early Facebook data scientist who now runs a lab at Mount Sinai. Tecco is the co-founder of Rock Health, a digital health investment firm.

“The investor community that as benefited from the bitcoin craze should use this foresight (and luck!) to help others,” Tecco told CNBC. “We hope we are just the first.”
