Want to Live in a Scenic Italian Village? This Town is Selling Hundreds of Homes For Just $1.25

An Italian town is selling hundreds of abandoned homes for just $1.25, CNN reports.

Ollolai, located in the mountain region on the island of Sardinia, is selling the abandoned homes for just €1 in an effort to build toward the future.

The sales come with a catch, naturally. The stone buildings have been long abandoned and need to be refurbished. Buyers must agree to refurbish the homes within three years at the cost of approximately $25,000.

The plan was sparked out of fear the village would become a ghost town as the population has declined from 2,250 people to 1,300 over the last 50 years.

“We boast prehistoric origins,” Ollolai Mayor Efisio Arbau told CNN. “My crusade is to rescue our unique traditions from falling into oblivion.”

“Pride in our past is our strength. We’ve always been tough people and won’t allow our town to die,” he added.
